Review: Neeson in action again in 'Tombstones'

This photo released by Universal Pictures shows Liam Neeson, as Matt Scudder, in a scene from the film, “A Walk Among the Tombstones." (AP Photo/Universal Pictures, Atsushi Nishijima)LOS ANGELES (AP) — It's not for nothing that the names of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe are reverentially referenced in writer-director Scott Frank's adaptation of the 10th novel in Lawrence Block's long-running, best-selling series featuring unlicensed private eye Matthew Scudder. Distinctly and proudly old-fashioned in its retro, film noir vibe, "A Walk Among the Tombstones" is notable for its dark atmospherics and strong performance by Liam Neeson in the latest example of his unlikely late career transformation into an action hero.

California bill increases Hollywood tax credits
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown headed to the cradle of the Hollywood film industry Thursday to sign legislation that more than triples the state's tax credit to $330 million a year for films and TV shows produced in California.
Popular Venezuelan cartoonist fired over drawing

A political cartoon by Rayma Suprani using the signature of Venezuela's late President Hugo Chavez, bottom, reads in Spanish "Health," top, and "Health in Venezuela," bottom, appears on the Sept. 17 opinion page of El Universal newspaper in Caracas, Venezuela, Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014. The award-winning 19-year veteran of El Universal says she lost her job over her representation of the late Hugo Chavez's iconic signature as a flat-lined heartbeat to dramatize Venezuela's health care crisis. Her ouster has alarmed press freedom advocates who say once-independent media are seeing criticism of the socialist government snuffed out.
