Radio Legend, Casey Kasem

Casey Kasem passed away Father's Day morning at the age of 82.  I grew up listening to his almost hypnotic voice on America's Top 40 – what a show.  Not only was it packed with amazing music, Kasem made the show special with interesting facts about the artist, music flashbacks and long distance dedications that could bring tears to your eyes.

His voice was also famous outside of radio.  Casey Kasem was the voice of Shaggy on my still favorite Saturday morning cartoon, Scooby Doo.

Kasem, who suffered from Lewy body dementia (similar to Parkinsons), had been ill for some time.  And, in the months leading up to his death, there was a vicious family feud going on between his wife and his children regarding his failing health, medical care and visitation rights.  In the end, he died peacefully, with his family and friends by his side.

I love my parents and my brother dearly.  I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be a family ripped apart by those circumstances – and I hope I never do.  In fact, I'm sure my parents would be disappointed if my brother and I behaved that way towards one another EVER.

In honor of Casey Kasem, I'll end today's blog with his famous words "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."
