Five Tips So You Don't Embarrass Yourself Eating Sushi
1. You can use your hands. If you suck at using chopsticks, good news: Traditionally, sushi is eaten with your FINGERS. That's why in higher-end places they give you hand towels before eating. At our house, we give you beach towels..
2. Don't rub your chopsticks together. For some reason, it became a 'thing' to take those disposable wooden chopsticks they give you, and rub them together. Why? To remove splinters? Don't. It makes you look like a rookie.
3. Use soy sauce and wasabi sparingly. Don't fill your soy sauce dish to the brim, it's considered wasteful. You only need a small amount, otherwise it'll overpower the delicate flavor of the fish. Also, adding wasabi to the soy sauce is considered bad form . . . even though everyone does it. If you want to look like a pro, just put the wasabi directly ON the fish.
4. Dip properly. When you dip sushi, roll the piece on its side and dip the just the FISH side lightly into the soy sauce. You're not supposed to dip the rice because it'll soak up too much soy sauce and overpower the fish.
5. Eat ginger separately. Ginger is a palate cleanser in between different types of sushi . . . don't put it ON the fish.
