KORA Q&A: Kevin Fowler

We are so excited that Kevin Fowler is making a visit to Aggieland at Boulevard 217 this Friday and of course we had lots of questions for him. Read on to find out what he has to say about his collaboration with Amy Rankin on the song, “Before Somebody Gets Hurt,” Wade Bowen & Randy Rogers’ new album, hunting with Roger Creager, Aaron Watson & Cody Johnson, getting mistaken for Kyle Park and everything in between.
Also, if you haven’t seen the video for “Before Somebody Gets Hurt,” here it is!
98.3 KORA: How did the collaboration with Amy Rankin on your latest single “Before Somebody Gets Hurt” come about?
Kevin Fowler: We tried several different female singers on the song and her voice really just seemed to mesh well with mine. I think she did an awesome job!!
KORA: Where was the video shot? How long did it take to shoot?
Fowler: We shot it at my ranch out near Wimberley, TX. It gorgeous out there this time of year. We shot it all in one day. We had a contest on my social media sites where fans could win a chance to be in the video. I believe we had about 30 fans in it.
KORA: Do you prefer to write songs alone or with partners? Favorite partner(s)?
Fowler: I write both ways. Sometimes I write alone and sometimes with others. I have a small group of buddies that I like to write with. I write a lot with David Lee Murphy, Trent Willmon, Brandon Kinney and several other buddies. It always makes it fun to write with people you enjoy being around. And a few Bud Lights never hurts the writing process either.
KORA: What’s been the best part about starting your own label, Kevin Fowler Records? Was it an easy decision for you?
Fowler: I’ve alway had that independent spirit. All of my earlier records were on my own label. So, I’m no stranger to doing my own thing. The best part is calling all of the shots and not having to ask anybody before making a decision business wise  or musically. I love doing it my own thang. It’s the Texas way!!
KORA: Any plans to add other artists to your roster?
Fowler: No. I don’t really want to get into that part of it. My record label is just a way for me to get my music to my fans. I don’t have any plans to be a record label guy.
KORA: You have also opened your own wedding venue, the Rustic Ranch.  How is that going? And how is that experience different from the the music business?
Fowler: A lot people don’t know it about me but I’m a big fan of antiques and historic buildings. Over the last few years I’ve moved a bunch of historic structures to my ranch and have restored them. We’ve opened it to the public for wedding and other events. We call it Rustic Ranch. It’s gorgeous! You can check it out at www.rusticranchtexas.com
KORA: What is the main thing you hope fans take away from your live shows?
Fowler: I want people to come to our shows and have a good time. Leave your worries at home and forget about it all for night. Do a little dancin’, drinkin’ and enjoy!
KORA: If  Kevin Fowler, Roger Creager, Cody Johnson and Aaron Watson go deer hunting together who is most likely to get the biggest buck?
Fowler: Aaron Watson, because he’d probably be the only one that did over sleep from the partying the night before.
KORA: Who is most likely to get lost in the woods?
Fowler: I’m gonna have to say Creager. Cuz he’s kind of a city boy!
KORA: Who is most likely to talk about’ the big one that got away”?
Fowler: Me, because I’ve been known to “stretch the truth”. That’s part of hunting and fishing!!
KORA: Who is most likely to sleep late and miss the whole trip?
Fowler: I’m gonna have to give that one to Cody for drinking too much!!
KORA: If you could have had a recurring role on one of these three tv shows which would it be?  Gunsmoke, The Dukes of Hazzard or The Rifleman
Fowler: Definitely Gunsmoke. When I was a kid I was a huge Gunsmoke fan!!! I had all of the Gunsmoke merchandise including the Gunsmoke lunch box that I toted to school daily!
KORA: What is your favorite thing to dip in nacho cheese?
Fowler: My fingers!!! I love that stuff!!
KORA: What’s in your CD player/playing on your iTunes right now?
Fowler: I just got an advance copy of Randy and Wade’s “Hold My Beer” cd. Love it!
KORA: Do you own more boots or guitars? More guns or fishing poles?
Fowler: More boots and definitely more guns!! I think I have about 20 guns. You can never have too many boots or guns!!!
KORA:  How old were you when you got your first guitar? What kind of guitar was it? Do you still have it?
Fowler: I think I was 14. My parents bought me a cheap Alverez acoustic guitar. I still have it to this day. That guitar has done me well. I wrote most of the hits that I play in my shows every night on that guitar. I wrote the entire Beer Bait and Ammo record on that guitar.
KORA:  Have you ever injured yourself on stage? How?
Fowler: Many times. I slipped on some Mardi Gras beads one time and nearly broke my neck.
KORA:  Have you ever been mistaken for someone else? Who was it? Did you correct them or go along with it?
Fowler: The other day a guy came up to me and said “Mr. Park, I love your music”. I finally figured out that he thought I was Kyle Park for some reason. I have to tell him “No. I’m not that short!”
KORA:  Be honest, who is your celebrity man crush?
Fowler: I’m still a huge Merle Haggard fan. Went and saw Merle and Willie the other night. I never got up the courage to go over and say hi. I’m not just a musician I’m still a huge music fan too.
If you still haven’t gotten your tickets for his show this Friday at Boulevard 217, what are you waiting for?? Get ’em right here.
Also, keep up with everything Fowler on his website, Facebook & Twitter.
