Texas County Healthcare: Rivalries Set Aside for Better Services

brazos-news-image-doctors-healthcare

An epic rivalry has been tossed aside for a great cause.

Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center (Texas A&M Health) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) are joining forces to expand access to healthcare in Jeff Davis County. With a population of just under 2,000, the county is limited, overstretched, and distant.

With only a single physician on duty, residents must drive at least 22 miles to Alpine, Texas for general medical care. For residents requiring specialty, same-day and pediatric care, the drive stretches even further – a two-and-a-half-hour journey in one direction.

All of this will soon change with the launch of a new medical clinic spearheaded by both centers. The clinic is stationed in a retrofitted 40-foot Texas A&M BUILD container. This isn’t the partnership’s first rodeo: there’s another BUILD container like it that recently opened in Kenedy County in South Texas.
