Spirit in the Sky' Singer Critically Injured

The singer-songwriter behind the 1969 rock hit "Spirit in the Sky" was hospitalized yesterday after being critically injured in a Northern California car accident that killed a motorcyclist.

Norman Greenbaum, 72, a longtime resident of Santa Rosa, was the passenger of a Subaru Outback that collided with a motorcycle at a street intersection near the city, the California Highway Patrol says.

The motorcycle driver died at the scene; his passenger and Greenbaum were taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

The Subaru driver was not injured and investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.

“When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky

Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky”

Scientists Have Figured Out Why Hipsters Grow Beards

Scientists have figured out why hipsters grow beards.  It's because they need to show they're manly AND stand out in the huge pool of guys in online dating . . . and a beard takes care of both.

Evolutionary scientists at the University of Western Australia came up with two answers…

One:  In large societies, male primates develop "badges" that make them stand out.  Through evolution, some monkeys have developed larger noses, wider cheeks, or even WARTS on their lips.  For humans, guys can choose to grow a beard.

And two:  A beard helps you look more manly . . . and that can be a biological sign of power and aggressiveness.

Both of those are especially important for modern hipsters because they're competing in online dating . . .  which is such a large pool of “pretend men”, they need to push harder than ever to stand out as a unique, ‘Pretend man”.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

SURVEY SAYS: 70% of Us send this to Text the Wrong Person, and we do it all the time….

It's Not the Quantity of Time You Spend With Your Kids That Matters . . . It's the Quality

A new study found the AMOUNT of time you spend with your kid doesn't affect how they do in school, how they behave, or their emotional wellbeing.  What matters is the QUALITY of the time you spend with them.

From a new study out of the University of Toronto . . . In fact, they found if you're forcing yourself to spend time with your kids and that makes you stressed or angry, it's actually worse for them than not spending time with them at ALL.

COUNTRY NEWS

Country Stars Are Showing Support for Little Big Town's "Girl Crush"

There was a point last week when it looked like people were going to boycott LITTLE BIG TOWN's song "Girl Crush".  The threat had no legs, but just in case, a few country stars decided to offer their support to the band.

On Friday, REBA MCENTIRE posted an Instagram pic of her wearing a ball cap with the words "Girl Crush" printed on it.  She captioned it, "Tipping my hat to my friends @Little Big Town for their single #Girl Crush."

And then yesterday, MIRANDA LAMBERT hit up Instagram with a photo of her and BLAKE SHELTON kissing while wearing their "Girl Crush" ball caps.  She captioned it, "We love @Little Big Town.  #Girl Crush."”

Speaking of Blake Shelton:  He describes his single "Sangria" as, quote, "One of the sexiest songs I've ever cut.  It's not too over-the-top, but it's pure sex."  (Here's the steamy video.  CAREFUL:  It's almost NSFW.)

One more thing:  ROB SCHNEIDER posted a photo of him and Blake on the set of the ADAM SANDLER movie "The Ridiculous 6".  It's worth a look just to see Blake sporting a wicked-ass cowboy mustache.  He plays Wyatt Earp in the film.

Dolly Parton's Desire to Succeed is Greater Than Her Fear of Failing

DOLLY PARTON is so famous that I sometimes forget she's also a kickass businesswoman.  Her Dollywood theme park is in its 30th season, and this summer she'll be opening a resort nearby called DreamMore.

"People" asked her to share a few thoughts about what it takes to get to her level.  She said, quote, "The key to my success has always been that my desire to succeed has always been greater than my fear.

"I've been scared to death about a lot of things, but then I think, 'Okay, you gotta buckle up, girl.  You've got yourself here, so get out there and just do it.'  And I just ask God to help me, and I follow that light."

Of course, the next step is that thing called hard work.  She had a few words about that too.  She said, quote, "Everybody wishes that they were rich or famous, but that's not necessarily going to happen if you don't have the spunk to make it happen.

"You gotta work your dreams; you gotta put legs and arms and arms and wings on them!"

COUNTRY MUSIC EXTRAS

CARRIE UNDERWOOD posted a photo of her son Isaiah on Instagram.  He's sleeping, but with one tiny hand firmly gripping a little hockey stick.  She wrote, "The Predators are in the playoffs!  Just waiting to get called up!  #PutMeInCoach"  (Carrie's husband Mike Fisher plays center on the Nashville Predators.)

Speaking of Carrie Underwood:  She's one of the acts on this year's Watershed Music Festival.

Other performers include Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line, Frankie Ballard, Easton Corbin, Hunter Hayes, Sam Hunt, Jana Kramer, and Chris Young.  It's going down July 31st through August 2nd at The Gorge in George, Washington.

You can check for details at Watershedfest.com.

GARY ALLAN doesn't want to be one of those artists who just fades away.  He says, quote, "I want longevity.  I want to be the guy that in 20 years you go, 'How is he still here?'  I want to still be writing and recording relevant songs and have your head in the game."

ERIC CHURCH appears on the KEITH URBAN song "Raise 'Em Up", and he says he felt the song's hit potential the moment he heard it.

When CHRIS YOUNG finishes recording an album, he steps away . . . and doesn't listen to it again for a while.
